Neighborhood Renewal

Our league President Mark and Vice Pres Victoria are the City reps on the neighborhood renewal project. They recently engaged with a City rep on some concerns and this was the feedback:

a. Changes in parking along 84 Avenue and 85 Avenue west of 109 Street

The City of Edmonton is currently reviewing the Residential Parking Program, if you have any inquiries about changing the parking along an avenue or street, you can reach out to parkingassets@edmonton.ca directly and they will be able to provide you with more information.

b. Marked crosswalks for the north-south alley connecting 84 Avenue, 85 Avenue, and 86 Avenue just west of 109 Street

Alleys are already a legal crossing point for pedestrians. No paint markings or additional signage will be installed.

From page 26 of the
Final Design for the alley west of 109 Street, the curb ramp was only to be constructed on the south side of 84 Avenue, 85 Avenue the road widths were narrowed to shorten the walking distance, and only 86 Avenue was to be marked and have dedicated signage (all completed as per plan).

Existing mature boulevard trees on 85 Avenue prevented the installation of curb ramps in close proximity to the alley crossing.

c. North side of 86 Avenue west of 109 Street change from angled parking to parallel parking

In the Final Design, angled parking was planned but during construction Parking Services performed an inspection and determined that angled parking does not provide clear sightlines for motorists turning from 109 Street heading westbound. Changes from the final design and what we construct sometimes occur if an item is deemed unsafe after further review.

d. Installation of Yellow/Red pole for Playground Zone signs

We will be installing white retroflective sleeves on the pedestrian crosswalk signs on 86 Avenue west of 109 Street.

e. Change from Oliver to 86 Avenue street plaques

Oliver became a contentious word therefore plaques were changed to 86 Avenue.

f. Install no right turn on red sign at the 87 Avenue and 109 Street intersection

This arterial road is outside the scope of Neighbourhood Renewal therefore we will not be installing this sign.

g. 86 Avenue and 109 Street pedestrian activated crossing

This was considered during the engagement/design phase but was shut down by the Traffic Signals department as there already is a signalized pedestrian crossing at 85 Avenue and 109 Street.

h. 84 Avenue Chicanes add boulder or raised planter to deter vehicles driving over and damaging it especially during winter

The City will not be adding boulders in the road right-of-way. Additional signs will be installed with EPCOR's contact information for maintenance inquiries.

i. Chain link fence along the north side of the Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball Club - 10943 84 Avenue

A Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) report that the City Arts Center initiated called for the complete removal of the fence east of the driveway up to 109 Street to deter encampments and also to not create a space where people could feel trapped.

j. Additional speed hump along 84 Avenue from 110 Street to 109 Street near the playground

No additional speed hump will be installed.
