Priority Growth Area Rezoning News

Over the summer the City of Edmonton held engagement activities to help inform which sites in The Garneau should be selected for rezoning. The engagement for this phase of the project is now closed and the City has posted the in-person engagement materials online:

Next Steps for the City of Edmonton

The City will now analyze the feedback received and weigh it against relevant policy and technical considerations to determine which sites should be selected for rezoning. This includes what new standard zones and zone modifiers should be applied to the sites to achieve the intended outcomes of encouraging more housing and business investment. Feedback, along with how it was used, will be summarized in a What We Heard report and made available later this fall.

The information gathered will also be used to inform the next phase of engagement, where the City will continue to involve the community in the decision-making process. They will provide another opportunity for you to share your thoughts on the sites proposed for rezoning before they go to City Council for a decision in early 2025.

Next Steps for the Garneau Community League

We will continue to keep our members updated as this project progresses. Our Planning Committee continues to work hard to advocate for our key goals which include:

  • Maintaining small-scale, ground-oriented, family-friendly housing on approximately 33% of Garneau’s land base and expand heritage protections

  • Identifying appropriate areas for increased density along arterial roads
