Start of Construction - City Arts Centre Rehabilitation Project
The league recently received an update from the City of Edmonton ab out the City Arts Centre Rehabilitation Project, which includes a closure of the building for part of 2025.
Construction for this project will begin on March 10, 2025. City Arts Centre is 50 years old and many of its building systems have reached the end of their lifecycle and require rehabilitation or replacement.
The City Arts Centre Rehabilitation Project involves hazardous materials abatement, life safety system upgrades and sidewalk repairs, as well as replacement of the building envelope, building systems and some interior finishes. This project will repair the building’s structure and replace the roof, as well as some of the facility’s flooring and plumbing, and its heating, electrical and ventilation systems. The project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026.
The rehabilitation project will bring the building up to current building codes while improving accessibility, energy efficiency, safety and user experience throughout the building and site.
City Arts Centre will temporarily close from April to September 2025 to accommodate necessary rehabilitation work. Facility users, rental groups and tenants will be notified before the closure, and steps are being taken to reduce the closure’s impact:
Garneau Tennis and Beach Volleyball will continue to operate this summer. The City has been communicating and coordinating the construction work with the Club Executive.
The City Arts Centre inside washrooms will be accessible for the majority of the construction time. There will be occasional washroom access construction disruption, however, these times will be minimal.
