Adopt a day at the Garneau Plaza: Join Our Community Cleanup Crew

We at the Garneau Community League feel grateful to live within this amazing spot in Edmonton. You may have noticed some changes over the past several months, including the addition of rainbow picnic tables throughout the community. As an organization, our hope is to create spaces within Garneau where folks can meet, connect, and build relationships. We have also strived to do this in collaborating with Garneau School in creating the pollinator garden at the plaza space at 109st and 83 Ave.

We are always so excited to see folks using that space to eat takeout, catch up with a friend, do some work on their laptop, or simply take a break. Sadly, with the social and additional issues we currently face city-wide, we have also observed an increase in garbage and drug use within this space.

We would love for the plaza to become a safe, vibrant community space. While we are unable to solve the deep underlying social issues, we are hopeful that we can improve the safety and usability of the plaza space.:

  • Part of this we hope to achieve though space activation. This simply means having more people using the space and more eyes on the space, in order to reduce the desirability or the area to use drugs, etc.

  • Secondly, we hope to do this by maintaining the cleanliness of the space. Garbage sadly seems to attract more garbage, and we are hopeful that by creating a team to pick up garbage on a routine basis, the location may become less prone to litter.

This is where you come in, dear neighbour. We are hoping you will consider joining a team of 2-4 (more are welcome), other neighbours in "adopting" the plaza for 1 day/week for the remainder of the outdoor season. This means meeting at the plaza with your group weekly, to both activate the space and pick up any trash or debris. Once the groups are created, you are welcome to choose a group leader, and coordinate how you would like to proceed with your weekly meetings.

If you are interested in an opportunity to get to know some neighbours, as well as increase the safety and beauty of our awesome neighbourhood, please consider signing up for a day. We also ask that everyone sign up with Volunteer Edmonton for safety information regarding litter clean up, and to allow city tracking of litter pick up.

Sign up now to adopt a day at the plaza!

We understand no one person can change a community, but are hopeful if we can join together, we can build a safe, vibrant, welcoming space for us all.
